‘Love Will Find A Way’ is the new and twelfth solo album, from the phenomenal Philip Bailey, recognised for his four octave range, distinctive falsetto voice in the legendary group Earth, Wind & Fire. Once again Bailey has proven again and again that you don’t have to compromise your integrity as an artist to remain relevant. His model of mixing genres-a little pop, a little folk, a whole lot of soul and funk-has become widely prevalent and successful.
The record is two years in the making, and Grammy award winner Bailey considers it a true labour of love, starting with the masterful artists assembled to perform are a who’s who in the jazz and pop music world. Talking to Louder Than War about the inspiration for the album Philip said “We were reeling and rocking with the social, political and economic unrest and all of that stuff, and I was thinking about songs that really spoke to people during such times. Curtis Mayfield was such a voice with the songs that he wrote and performed along with Abbey Lincoln. We did an Abbey Lincoln song as well. My daughter Trinity’s son Philip, and Deshawn, who is my social networking expert, made me sit down and we talked about a concept just starting with people that I had relationships with. They were Christian McBride and Chick Corea. So we started there and moved that to Robert Glasper and the rest of the cast on the album. It took about 2 1/2 years. It’s a self-funded project, one that I believed in enough to put my money where my mouth was until we finished it, mixed it, shopped it and ended up partnering with Verve.”
On ‘Love Will Find a Way’, Philip proves that the atmosphere and ideas that made Earth Wind & Fire possible – a respect for genuine musicianship, a conviction that all music matters – are alive and well in 2019. Along with trusted friends like bassist Christian McBride, the iconic jazz pianist Chick Corea and drum legend Steve Gadd, the album features several of the brightest contemporary lights in jazz, R&B, pop and more: keyboardist Robert Glasper, saxophonist Kamasi Washington, rapper, musician and producer will.i.am, trumpeter Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, singer-songwriter Bilal, singer-saxophonist Casey Benjamin, guitarist Lionel Loueke, drummer Kendrick Scott and bassist Derrick Hodge, among many others.
‘Love Will Find A Way’ is Bailey's twelfth solo album since his debut in 1983 with ‘Continuation’, which reached No. 19 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and the 1984 platinum follow-up ‘Chinese Wall’, produced by Phil Collins. From 1984 to 1991, he released four gospel albums, including the Grammy-winning ‘Triumph’. And in 1999, Bailey released ‘Dreams’, his first jazz album. His sophomore jazz effort, which is also his last release from 2002, ‘Soul on Jazz’ reached No. 45 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart. The first single finds Bailey and company tackling the Curtis Mayfield song "Billy Jack" with silky aplomb!
