‘The Delta Sweete’ is the second studio album by American country pop star Bobbie Gentry: A concept album inspired by her Mississippi childhood, it was originally released in February 1968 by Capitol Records and recorded at Capitol Recording Studio (Hollywood). ‘The Delta Sweete’ is Bobbie Gentry’s most critically acclaimed album and has not been pressed in the UK or US since 1972. Interest in the album is at a high after Uncut recently placed it 4th in their ‘Ultimate Genre Guide’ to the top 40 singer-songwriter albums of all time, and in February 2019, Mercury Rev released their tribute album The Delta Sweete Revisited (chartered 32 in UK Albums chart and 1 in UK independent chart), with guest vocalists, Norah Jones, Beth Orton and Lucinda Williams to name a few).
This 2CD / 2LP release will feature the original album remixed and mastered from multi-tracks by Andrew Batt, and is supplemented by outtakes and demos, featuring two previously unleased tracks. The CD edition also features the original mono release of the album which has not appeared on CD before. Sleevenotes are supplied by Andrew, and are illustrated with unseen images from the Capitol archive.
Bobbie is best known for her debut single “Ode To Billie Joe” which reached No.1 in the US and scored big around the world. The track which she wrote and sang with her sultry voice and minimal backing from her guitar and strings in the background, it tells of a rural Mississippi family’s reaction to the news of the suicide of Billie Joe McAllister, a local boy to whom the daughter (and narrator) is connected. The album of the same name was also a big seller but the swiftly recorded follow-up failed to replicate the success of those first releases.
‘The Delta Sweete’ is a concept album based on modern life in the Deep South. Gentry wrote eight of the album’s 12 tracks, which detail her Mississippi childhood and includes vignettes of home and church life (“Reunion” and “Sermon”), as well as recollections of blues and country hits she heard as a youngster (“Big Boss Man” and “Tobacco Road”). The song “Okolona River Bottom Band”, accented by a sophisticated horn chart and breathy strings, used the same basic cadence as “Ode to Billie Joe”. Although ignored at the time today the album is seen as the best of the seven albums she released between 1967-1971.
