Our Overview.

The Manics fifth album saw the band under immense pressure after the massive success of ‘Everything Must Go’ their 1996 album which not only saw the band finally crossing over to mainstream popularity, but also was their first record without Richie Edwards who disappeared in 1995. Although the remaining trio considered splitting up, instead they rose like the phoenix and scored four Top 10 hits and then grabbed a couple of Brit Awards for their trouble in ‘97.

Sticking with producer Mike Hedges who midwifed the previous album, they continued to move towards a lush musical backdrop, away from their earlier hard rock sound. After sharing lyric writing duties with Edwards, Nicky Wire had to write all the words for their new album for the first time. The first single from the album: “If You Tolerate This, Then Your Children Will Be Next” gave the band their first No.1 single and the album followed it to No.1 in the albums chart a few weeks later, also their first. Subsequent singles also performed well and the album sold as well as the last one, including increased across Europe and Asia. More Brit Awards and sold out tours followed in 1999, consolidating their position as one of Britain’s biggest bands.
