‘True Voices’ is an album of songs by iconoclastic songwriters performed by iconoclastic artists. The official CD reissue of the classic ‘90s Capitol Records album featuring performances by Lucinda Williams, P. F. Sloan, Susan Cowsill, Richie Furay, Percy Sledge, Gene Clark and more. This edition adds 6 performances including the newly recorded Ode To L.A. While Thinking Of Brian Jones, Deceased by Johnny Indovina of Human Drama.
This was originally a poem that Jim Morrison wrote shortly after Brian Jones died. Carla Olson was given permission by the Morrison estate to compose the music. Quite a few of the artists who contributed to the album have also since departed and a trio of songs they have written were added: Percy Sledge’s take on Jackie Lomax’s Fall Inside Your Eyes from Jackie’s Apple album debut, John York’s version of P.F. Sloan’s Upon A Painted Ocean and Richie Furay’s cover of Gene Clark’s classic She Don’t Care About Time. In all 12 of the 17 recordings are not available elsewhere and were recorded exclusively for 'True Voices'.
Among some of the standouts: ‘Surrender,’ the Tom Petty song, by Phil Seymour backed by 20/20. ‘Are You Lonely For Me Baby,’ the Freddie Scott hit written by Bert Berns and delivered here by Paul Jones of Manfred Mann. ‘Changes,’ written by Phil Ochs, covered by Gene Clark. ‘(Thank You) For Being Here.’ The only existing Brian Jones song! The vocal is by Krysia Kristianneaka Krysia Kocjan of the Natural Acoustic Band with all instruments played by Robin Williamson of the Incredible String Band. ‘At The End Of The Day,’ Sandy Denny’s gorgeous ballad, is performed by Susan Cowsill with Eric Johnson on guitar and piano. A portion of the proceeds from the recording will be donated to Music Mends Minds.
