2019 release. Live album recorded at Manchester's Old Granada Studios 13th July 2017. Also available on CD.
The seminal, post punk, synth pop, dance floor innovators New Order, returned to the stage at Manchester’s Old Granada Studios - where Joy Division made their television debut on Tony Wilson’s So It Goes programme in 1978 - in June 2017, for the celebrated ‘Σ(No,12k,Lg,17Mif) New Order + Liam Gillick: So it goes .. shows’ an event seeing New Order deconstructing and creatively reworking a wealth of material from throughout their career: familiar and obscure, old and new.
New Order formed in Salford, England in 1980 from the ashes of Joy Division, by the surviving members: Bernard Sumner; guitar, Peter Hook; bass, and Stephen Morris; drums, upon the death of lead singer and band leader Ian Curtis. New Order headily embraced the technology of the times — drum machines, samplers, sequencers, synths, and arpeggiators — and took cues from the burgeoning world of electronic dance before gradually learning to write pop songs. Where Joy Division records were occasionally sloppy and frequently noisy, New Order presented a polished package every time.
This special series of intimate shows took over Old Granada Studios’ Stage 1 for five nights in June 2017. Created in collaboration with visual artist Liam Gillick, who has previously presented solo exhibitions at venues such as Tate Britain and MoMA in New York; and orchestrated by composer-arranger Joe Duddell, a fellow son of Manchester and a frequent collaborator with the band, the live show was performed by the band with a 12-strong synthesiser ensemble from the Royal Northern College of Music.
Featuring tracks such as ‘Disorder’, from Joy Division’s ‘Unknown Pleasures’ (and not played live for 30 years), up to 2015’s ‘Plastic’ from New Order’s critically acclaimed Top 5 album ‘Music Complete’, this is the perfect document of those magical nights.
The album was recorded live on 13th July 2017 and includes the full show and encore plus three additional tracks recorded over the residency to give listeners a full representation of the breadth of material performed.
