tUnE-yArDs' fourth album will arrive on 19th January in the form of new album ‘I can feel you creep into my private life’ released on 4AD Records. and their follow up to ‘Nikki Nack’. Tune-Yards is the music project of New England native and front woman Merrill Garbus. When Merrill Garbus first committed her tUnE-yArDs persona to tape, she used a simple dictaphone to capture every part and then lovingly pieced it all together on GarageBand. A laborious process partly enforced by tight finances, the resulting album ‘Bird-Brains’ (2009) was a sheer joy. A record so unique, it immediately set hearts racing; The Guardian in their five-star review went as far as to call her "the find of the year."
Merrill wrote the 12-track collection on the latest album, which was produced by longtime collaborator and newly official member, Nate Brenner. As a preview to the album, the duo has shared a teaser track called “Look at Your Hands”. It’s a fun, effervescent tune with 80s synth and a funky bass
.“Yes, the world is a mess, but I’ve been attempting to look more and more inward: how do all of these ‘isms’ that we live in manifest in me, in my daily activities, interactions?” Garbus said about the song in a press statement. “Some of the ’80s throwback production came from wanting the vocals to sound robotic, maybe to counter the sincerity of the lyrics. I started sampling my vocals with an MPC which I’ve wanted to do for years, and there was something that felt really right about my voice being trapped in a machine."
Thematically, the twelve new songs tackle race, politics, intersectional feminism and environmental prophecies head on. But in the billows of intense subject matter, the album arrives as Tune-Yards’ most immediate and upbeat music yet – this is music to dance to.
On I can feel you creep into my private life, Tune-Yards is officially a duo. Garbus is joined by long-time collaborator Nate Brenner who produced and wrote the album together with lyrics by Garbus. Tune-Yards worked with a mixer Mikaelin “Blue” Bluespruce (Solange, Kendrick Lamar). Much of the album was recorded at Tiny Telephone Oakland, in Oakland, CA and mastered in Harlem, NY by Dave Kutch (Jay-Z, Chance the Rapper).
